Mattel Settles Lawsuit with Bratz Designer Bryant

Mattel Inc. has settled its lawsuit against their former employee and Bratz dolls inventor Carter Bryant, but will continue with its suit against MGA Entertainment, manufacturer of the Bratz doll collection.

In April 2004, Mattel sued Bryant seeking $35 million in royalties paid by MGA in connection with his work on Bratz dolls. Mattel claimed that Bryant sold his ideas for Bratz to MGA in 2000 while still under contract to Mattel. The first Bratz dolls came to market in 2001.

The trial between MGA and Mattel will start on May 27th.

"Mattel has finally acknowledged that its suit against Carter Bryant was without merit," MGA said in a statement on Monday.

Isaac Larian, MGA's founder and CEO, said that he was confident that the jury will reject Mattel's claims in this first phase of the case. “MGA fully intends to pursue its $1 billion damage case against Mattel in Phase 2 right after the resolution of phase 1” he said.
