Copyright Promotions - June 2008

The orange cult cat with a soft spot for Lasagne is one of world’s most successful licensed properties,
in Germany especially with comic books, calendars, baby wear, shoes and accessories

On 19 June 1978 Garfield by Jim Davis made his debut as comic character. Now, 30 years later, the lazy cat with a strong leaning to No Sports and Lasagne still has a strong presence in his traditional terrain – the comic strip.

Volume 7 of the special Garfield Collective Edition was released in May 2008 by Ehapa Comic Collection, the comic division of EGMONT Publishing that also release other comic classics like Asterix and Lucky Luke. The 320 pages hardcover book is now available at Euros 29.90.

Fans who don’t want to dig deep into their pockets to enjoy the adventures of Garfield and Odie EGMONT Publishing also released a slimmed-down version: The Garfield softcover books “Gewicht zählt nicht (Volume 4)”, “Trimm Dich mit Torten (Volume 5)” and “Ein Herz für Essen (Volume 6)” – launched to the German market in April 2008 (112 pages, Euros 7).

Even at the age of 30 Garfield will appear on calendars: Heye Publishing, trendsetter for more than 40 years when it comes to humour, wit, satire and cartoons and claiming to be Germany’s leading calendar manufacturer, once more relies on Garfield in 2009: the Spiral Date Book features 12 typical Garfield pictures with cheeky remarks and will cost app. Euros 10.50. Each of the detachable pages of the Garfield bookmark calendar can be used as bookmark. (SRP Euros 2.80)

In the field of fashion the new Baby Garfield Line 2008 by Saborn International BV for the first time appeals to young mums. The new apparel collection includes baby wear, swim wear, bed linen, baby’s accessories and much more. For the traditional target group of six- to twelve-year olds ULC United License Company B.V will launch licensed Garfield shoes and United Labels, leading manufacturer and marketer of licensed comic products in Europe, will add new products to the existing portfolio of Garfield accessories and gift items.

On 25 May 2008, a special promotion celebrated Garfield’s 30th anniversary on the 2008 International Comic Salons: a large plush Garfield came and shook hands with his young and not-so-young fans. Lasagna cake for free, Garfield movies and the opportunity to win comic books with original signature by Jim Davis in a large Garfield Drawing Competition for Children topped of the event.
